PHOENIX — Newly promoted manager Pat Murphy’s road to the Milwaukee Brewers began at a urinal.
In 1981, Murphy decided on a move to Miami to pursue a boxing career. He boxed a bit growing up in Syracuse, N.Y., but also played football, basketball and baseball. He tried his hand at all three in college but ultimately decided to leave school partway through and head south.

PEORIA — It was Father’s Day and Opening Day all rolled into one.
The Murphy clan celebrated a baseball family’s best day Saturday, when Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy faced his son, Kai Murphy, a member of the San Diego organization.
A fun day for Dad?
“I can’t lie about that,” Pat said after the Brewers’ 11-7 victory. “Just extremely proud.”
Kai brought the Padres lineup card to home plate before the game, catching Pat off guard.
Then, he hit a two-run double in the seventh inning that cut the deficit to 8-5 in his first at-bat of the spring.
“I looked over, and I think he was laughing,” Kai said. “We have this kind of unwritten thing of we're best friends. We're going to go home after this and really remember and laugh about it. But on the field, we're both professionals. He has to manage his team, and I want to respect everyone else on the field.”

Yes, new Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy was riding around spring training in a scooter for a time as the 65-year-old had some fun poking fun at his age.
The scooter, which had a custom Brewers basket in the front and Brew Crew flag in the back, was gifted to Murphy from pitchers Wade Miley and Colin Rea.
But don't let that image fool you. And it wouldn't be wise to call him the "old man" or think the fiery nature he's known for is gone.
It appears to be the exact opposite as seen by his passionate speech to his squad on the team's first full workout at American Family Fields of Phoenix on Tuesday.
If Brewers fans weren't aware before about Murphy's ability to command a room, they should be now. And he'll likely add in some humor for good measure.

Before his 13 years coaching in pro ball, he was one of the game’s most successful college managers.
Pat Murphy last week became the Brewers’ 20th manager in franchise history after eight seasons as the Milwaukee Brewers bench manager. The job came open after former manager and Whitefish Bay native Craig Counsell made a jump to what he called his “dream job” with the Chicago Cubs.
Here’s what you need to know about the Brewers’ new skipper:

Pat Murphy has been a fixture with the Milwaukee Brewers since Nov. 2, 2015, when was hired as bench coach.
But on Thursday morning, almost as soon as he began his opening remarks after being officially introduced as the 20th manager in franchise history, Murphy noted his connection to the Brewers and the city of Milwaukee actually goes back much further.
"I think back to the first time I was here was the fall of 1987," said Murphy, seated front and center in the packed media auditorium at American Family Field. New associate manager Rickie Weeks sat to Murphy's right, general manager Matt Arnold to his left and nearly his entire coaching staff populated the first couple rows, with many of the team's brass from the front office also in attendance.

MILWAUKEE -- The Brewers have long prioritized continuity in their staffing decisions, and they are putting that philosophy to use in the choice of their new manager.
The club made it official on Wednesday by promoting Pat Murphy to manager after he served as Milwaukee’s bench coach for the past eight seasons. The club also confirmed that former Milwaukee infielder Rickie Weeks is joining the Major League staff in the role of associate manager to backfill Murphy’s spot, continuing a meteoric rise through the coaching ranks that began with Weeks’ hiring as a player development assistant in February 2022.
