Community outreach has been a signature of Murphy's teams, who are taught to give back to their communities and be positive role models. In 1995, Murphy created a non-profit organization called PTM Programs For Youth. The organization was originally referred to as the Guadalupe Project and provided baseball instruction and life skills lessons to underprivileged youth from Guadalupe, Ariz., a small town within the metro Phoenix area.
After the Guadalupe Project was established, PTM Programs For Youth found itself in the backyard "Sandlot" with a small group of players that became the Sandlot All-Stars, open to a broader group of children providing year-round mentoring for kids ages 5-9 by Arizona State coaches and student-athletes. The primary goal of the program was to build leadership skills, self-esteem, encourage academic success and explore career opportunities. Today, the Sandlot All-Stars has evolved into the Wilson Sandlot team, a premier travel ball team in Arizona that has produced over 150 NCAA players, several 1st round draft picks, and has now produced a handful of MLB players.
More recently, PTM Programs For Youth has been revived, bringing youth together as before to teach life skills through baseball starting at a young age.
